Student Grading Assistant Needed for Summer 10    Posted: May 2, 2010
Dear Students: I am searching for a grading assistant for the Summer and possibly for the Fall 2010 semester. This is paying job. This job requires mainly data entry into a easy grading software and an occasional grading of scantrons. You must be reliable, accurate, careful with details, efficient, and consistent in your work. I would like to meet with this person approximately 3 hours a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays ONLY for a few hours 3:30pm-5:45pm between during the Summer 2010. We could meet for 1/5 hours each day or for 3 hours on one day. If you are interested, write me a brief email about your interests and what your schedule could possibly be for the Summer. Again, I need some reliable that can meet for the three hours per week on a regular basis during the summer semester. If things come up and you are unable to grade for me then that puts me really behind. So please only consider the position if you can really do it. Send your brief email to: profess

Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman Quotes 1. "Life has three aspects: Paradox, Humor, and Change. - Paradox: Life is a mystery; don't waste time figuring it out. - Humor: Keep a sense of humor, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure - Change: Know that nothing stays the same." 2. "There is never nothing going on. There are no ordinary moments." 3. "When you feel fear. Use the sword, take it up here and cut the mind to ribbons, slash through all those regrets and fears, anything else that lives in past or the future" 4. "Take out the trash from what's inside your head." 5. "A warrior is not about perfection or victory or invulnerability. He's about absolute vulnerability. That is the only true courage." 6. "There is no starting or stopping - only doing." 7. "There's no greater purpose than service to others." 8. "Everyone wants to tell you what to do and what's good for you. They don't want you to find your own answers, they want you to belie

FINAL EMAIL    Posted: Dec 19, 2009
Dear Class Wow! What a great semester! I really enjoyed meeting all of you and I am so excited that I will see some of you again in the Spring. It is my dream to have students in my class for more than one semester. Thanks to Amber, Curtis, Francisco, Jeremy, Min, and Taylor for their great insights and for keeping the conversations alive. To those who talked all the time during lecture remember that you are not the only students in class. Remember that other students are trying to learn and that small talk is disrespectful for them as well as to me. Thanks to everyone for being a great student as well. Often times I only get to see a student once. I send out an email each semester indicating which new courses I will teach so maybe you can join me again in the summer or Fall/spring of 2010. I usually teach PHL100, PHL102A and PHL 102B here at City and Miramar and Mesa. Remember that due to the budget crisis the classes fill up quickly and the Deans/Chairs really want to make sur

Post-traumatic stress may harm kids' brains    Posted: Dec 9, 2009
(CNN) -- Psychological trauma may leave a visible trace in a child's brain, scientists say. A new study published in the Journal of Pediatric Psychology found that children with symptoms of post-traumatic stress had poor function of the hippocampus, a part of the brain that stores and retrieves memories. This is the first study to use functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, to look at the function of the hippocampus in youth with symptoms of post-traumatic stress, researchers said. The findings are in line with what has been previously found in adults. The study was led by Dr. Victor Carrion, and the senior author was Dr. Allan Reiss, both at the Center for Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences Research at Stanford University School of Medicine. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a condition that children and adults develop in response to a traumatic event. Intrusive memories, increased anxiety and emotional arousal are some of the symptoms, and typically they begin withi

People Type With Just Thoughts    Posted: Dec 6, 2009
By focusing on images of letters, people with electrodes in their brains can type with just their minds, scientists now reveal. These findings make up one more step on the road to mind-machine interfaces that may one day help people communicate with just their thoughts. Researchers have recently employed brain scans to see numbers and maybe even pull videos from inside people's heads. The neuroscientists were monitoring two patients with epilepsy for seizure activity with electrodes placed directly on the surface of their brains to record electrical activity generated by the firing of nerve cells. This kind of procedure requires a craniotomy, a surgical incision into the skull. How it works Lead investigator Jerry Shih, a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic campus in Jacksonville, Fla., wanted to test how well their fledgling mind-machine interface functioned in these patients. He reasoned it would perform better when electrodes were placed directly on the brain instead of when

RATE MY PROFESSORS website    Posted: Dec 6, 2009
Dear class: I see that some of my students have posted some comments on RateMyProfessors which reminded me that I wanted to tell the class about it as well. If you enjoyed the class or me as the instructor let other future students know about it as well. I believe that the students' voices are very important. I encourage all of my students on the first day of class to read student reviews. Well, now is the time for you to contribute if you wish. Of course, all comments are welcomed but remember that if you wish to post any negative comments that you are sincere and honest and not just being mean and spiteful. The comments should be constructive and useful for future students who have to decide on what class to take and with what instructor. Thank you for the recent comments already posted and for those still to come. In Chicago I had over 200 comments in three years. I am trying to break that record but I need your help. I only have 27 reviews at SD City so far. http://w

Spring 2010 Courses    Posted: Dec 2, 2009
Dear current and former students: I have a tentative teaching schedule for the Spring 2010. Given the current budget crisis, the class cuts and the class caps of 35 student, I thought I would inform you of my potential classes for the Spring 2010. Getting into a class will be very difficult in the semesters to come. The best thing is to register as soon as possible. If you are interested in taking another course with me here are the spring 2010 options. I am also at SWC and MiraCosta if you want to know my schedule there. We have been informed and told to enforce the 35 student caps which means that we cannot let too many add students in. So the best thing is to be official enrolled. I hope to see some of you again in the future. Final Grade and end of the semester    Posted: Nov 21, 2009
Dear Class Well we are nearing the end of our time together this semester. I know that we are all very tired and are getting burned out. We all somehow balance work, school, family and health. Near this time of the semester we tend to burn out and no longer give our best effort, myself included. As I begin the grading finalization process I noticed that quite a few of your are not doing so well in my course thus far for a variety of reasons. As you know we meet over a period of approximately 16 weeks. Assignments are due throughout the entire semester. I see that many of you have elected not to do some or many of the weekly journal entries. Needless to say the journals are an essential part to the course work as a whole. I see that some of you have not done one of the papers nor have completed the on line chapter quizzes or might have missed an exam. Many of you have a pretty poor attendance record and have missed more than the allowable (2) excused absence. Some of you have miss
